Other Conditions

Genetic testing is used to diagnose rare genetic disorders, find inherited reasons for common conditions, and predict risk for some health problems. Testing for gene variants can tell if you have a higher than usual risk for things like clotting too easily (thrombophilia) or getting Crohn's disease. People with a common health problem could have an inherited reason for it — like very high cholesterol from familial hypercholesterolemia or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease from alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. These inherited conditions are important to find out about because they usually need to be treated differently and other relatives have a high risk.
